St. Nicholas, New Year and Epiphany
St. Nicholas was not a traditional feast in the whole Slovenian Istria.
People, who celebrated St. Nicholas, donated to their children oranges,
chocolates and toys.
The tradition of waiting for the New Year spread in Istria, just in the
middle of 20th century. Later, Istrian people started gathering in the
local inn or at home, where they sang, ate and toasted the New Year.
During the first day of the year or in occasion of the Epiphany,
children went from house to house because villagers gave them almonds,
dried figs, nuts or other things that they had at home.

Festive December atmosphere in Koper
Symbolic lighting of New Year's lights in Koper and larger places in rear will start on Monday, 6th December in municipality Koper and will last until 6th January 2010. Alongside magnificent, 16meters high fir, Tito's square will be beautified with ten smaller two meters trees, that will be decorated by pupils of primary school municipality Koper.
A magical moment of lighting of New Year's lights will be on Monday 6th December at 17:00 on central town square and will be accompanied by amusing program. Pupils of choir of primary school of Dušana Bordona will perform on Tito's square stage with their children rhymes and like every year Koper freshmen and preschool children will have their own performance too. At this occasion municipality Koper will give them a painting books Get to know Koper in name of St. Nicholas. Paint book was made and published by municipality Koper in cooperation with bookstore Libris. Main actors in the book of author Jure Pogačnik Ajdič are little snipes, which already became some kind of protective sign of tourist and event activity in municipality Koper.
December activity in Koper will be varied by daily events under name Festive shooting stars of Koper, organized by Association of cultural society of municipality Koper under sponsorship of municipality Koper. These events will takeplace during 7th and 18th December at 18:00 on Tito's square. Various performers will appear every day, amongst them are the pupils of Music school Koper, Folk vocalists KD Mandrač Koper, Music st.Lazar Boršt, Girls from Škofije, Mixed choir Milko Margon Marezige, KD Hunter choir Dekani, TŠKD st. Nikolas Gračišče, Mixed choir KD Pobegi-Čežarji
All housekeeping’s in municipality Koper will also get a homonymous calendar of December events- Festive shooting stars of Koper in these days.
